Żegnamy Ariela Szarona | Ariel Sharon’s passing

Talmud Bawli, Sotah 36, 72

With great sadness we mark the passing of a great statesman, Ariel Sharon, this past Shabbat.

„It happens many times that a great military leader becomes a leader of a country. Having achieved various outcomes – from the point of view of the well-being of the citizens, Ariel Sharon z”l (1928-2014) was the first politician from Jerusalem to loudly say that Israel is not a country of pyramids.”

In other words — echoing the words of our movement, the Progressive Union for Reform Judaism — In view of his passing on Shabbat Beshalach – with the Song of the Sea – we dedicate to his memory this beautiful Gemara passage:

„Rabbi Judah said: [while the Children of Israel stood at the shores of the Sea] Each one argued with the next saying, „I do not want to go into the sea first.” While they argued, Nachshon son of Amminadav jumped up and went into the sea first.” Bavli Sotah 36, 72
